What is 3D Secure?
3D Secure was developed by leading credit card providers to make online payments more secure. The system is now used by most banks and provides additional protection for online credit card payments.
How does 3D Secure work?
With 3D Secure 2.0, the authentication of the credit card holder is carried out using modern security methods to ensure that only the rightful cardholder can complete the payment. Simply knowing the credit card details is no longer sufficient.
Instead of a fixed password, the system uses dynamic and secure methods such as:
- One-time passwords (OTPs) delivered via SMS or app.
- Biometric methods such as fingerprint or facial recognition.
- Confirmation through the bank app provided by the credit card issuer.
These measures ensure that payments are processed quickly and securely. For low-risk transactions, additional authentication is often skipped entirely, as the bank and merchant exchange data in the background for risk assessment.
First-time use of 3D Secure
If you are using 3D Secure for the first time, you may be prompted to set up your preferred authentication method (e.g., app or SMS). Once this setup is complete, you will be asked to confirm future payments – depending on the provider, this may be via app, SMS, or a biometric method.
Advantages of 3D Secure 2.0
- Increased security: Additional protective measures prevent misuse of credit card details.
- User-friendly experience: Fewer interruptions during the payment process, as many transactions are automatically verified.
- Compliance with PSD2 regulations: The system meets the legal requirements for strong customer authentication within the EU.
